A past of several thousand years
The town is of Islamic origin and was conquered by James I in 1233.
Its Arab castle, which played a historical role as a fortified town, was
significantly damaged during times of the Carlists.
A trip through its history and art
Starting a tourist stroll through the town from plaza de la Font up to
the medieval sector, one will pass the remains of the medieval walls and
the Modernist villas of the 19th century, after which it is possible to
stop to contemplate a natural wonder: Grossa Rock.
It is an impressive mass of red rock at the foot of Asunción parish
church. In plaza del Ayuntamiento, the town hall has maintained its
Renaissance proportions.
A visit to Batlle palace, the former residence of the royal
administrator and representative of the Montesa Order is also a must.
Nowadays it holds Vicente Aguilera Cerni Contemporary Art Museum with
the works of some 400 artists, such as Miró, Chillida, Canogar, Josep
Renau, Equipo Crónica and Genovés.
The Arab castle is impressive.
Other places of interest are the Sang Gothic church which is of a
medieval origin and the Sant Miquel chapel (19th century).
Piques, Bolimini and Clot
3 km away from the town is Piques fountain, with its great volume of
water forming a waterfall with seven basins.
Its water has diuretic qualities. Bolimini Cave is also in the outskirts
of Vilafamés. Clot is a circular cavity with a surface area of 1,300 sq
m and a depth of between 8 to 16 m.
